Fiber Optic Technician

Job Summary

A Fiber Splicer is knowledgeable about telecommunication network structures and is familiar with fiber optic cable, splice enclosures, and the functionality of each. Makes sure that fiber optic cable is properly terminated, spliced, and prepped, while OTDR is performed and fusion splicing equipment tested. A Fiber Splicer can read and interpret existing fiber matrices, as well as troubleshoot and perform maintenance to resolve signal problems.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret, input, and analyze data with a high degree of accuracy and completeness.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work within time constraints.
  • Operate technical equipment, including but not limited to, computer, OTDR and fusion splicing equipment, and functionality.
  • Must have knowledge of fiber optic color codes, as well as interpret prints in underground and aerial environments.
  • Complete daily production reports of work performed.
  • Must be detail-oriented and proficient with paperwork.
  • Ability to use proper use of hand tools, ladders, and equipment to assist in the completion of assigned projects.
  • Clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Lift and manipulate splice enclosures and other plant and equipment.
  • Work safely with or without supervision.
  • Excellent manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work in cramped and/or enclosed spaces for extended periods.
  • Work aloft from a ladder, aerial lift device, or by gaffing.
  • Splice fiber optic cables including loose tube. Construct a proper splice case. Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Perform bi-directional OTDR testing, along with power meter testing and capture loss to ensure splicing loss budget is adhered to.
  • Create complete closeout documentation packets for all splice locations.
  • Must have prior experience performing mid-sheath entries (ring cuts) and buffer tube ring cuts.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years experience with splicing loose tube fiber optic.
  • Familiar with hand tools and equipment (wrenches, drills, ladders, lanyards, forklifts, saws, etc.)
  • Own basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to lift and pull cable (70 pounds).
  • Ability to apply reasoning and understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work in emergencies at night and weekends if needed, including but not limited to holidays and extending days.
  • Ability to be on-call.
  • Some travel will be required.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Valid Driver’s License; CDL License is a plus.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and motor vehicle record check.

Working Conditions

  • Some out-of-town travel as required.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 70 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Must comply with the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
